This author has had access to hundreds of Executives. This limited access to such a small group in any workforce has produced information, which has been translated to assist anyone who is an executive or expects to be one in the future.

Mistake 1: Good tips on wardrobe expiration dates.

Mistake 2: Good tips on handling job leads. Additionally, the letter on p 25 it's either a dated example, or Blatant Egocentric is out of touch with changing job markets. If it is the latter, it appears that Blatant has never experienced a market where he was required to reach out to contacts.

Mistake 3: Executive Tone has to be controlled otherwise the executive will be considered a bully. Curious to the age group referenced in mistake 3.

Mistakes: 4-7 and 10 applies to all roles.

Now mistake 8 is interesting. Why was the well-respected executive so cheap? Weird right? My next thought is what is the definition of a well-respected business connection. Apparently, this connection was mislabeled. The author spent five hours with this executive. When you consider the total time spent in travel plus the meal expense, then I would agree this connection was a huge disappointment.

How Smart People Sabatoge Their Job Search edition by Diane Chapman Susan Howington SelfHelp eBooks Reviews

I liked that the chapters are short and to the point!
For three years now, I've been searching for some practical advice that can actually assist me with my executive-level job search. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I've bought and read well over 100 books on the subject--but none compared to this book by Susan Howington. Finally, I found one that doesn't just rehash the obvious, but actually opened my eyes to my personal vulnerabilities and mistakes. They say old habits die hard, but I'll admit that this book really proved that adage wrong!
This book is a must read. The author tells it how it is which is what people need when they are unemployed. It is quick and to the point and will motivate you rather than demotivate. Highly recommend.
This book is a gem! Having been through several career transitions, I'm thrilled to have discovered this book and its clear insights on how to conduct an effective job search with a focus on avoiding the simple pitfalls. Her style is direct, her examples are spot-on. You could spend thousands of dollars to have an executive coach tell you these exact same principles. A must-read!
I just finished reading Susan Howington's new book.
Her knowledge and understanding of the issues and problems related to the job search is amazing. The best part is she is able to boil down the mistakes people make to a relatively simple and easy to read format. The examples that are provided really help to clarify a number of points that she makes throughout the book. I have already started looking at myself and using some of the recommendations. I want to thank Susan for taking the time to write the book and share her ideas with the world. I would definitely recommend the book to anybody that is in job search mode.
A must read. The book helps your job search from a different point of view. it covers things one sometimes does not realize these are so important.
As an HR Executive AND a Job Search Coach I highly endorse this book! I wish more people would read it before they cross the path of the hiring manager or HR Executive. I have seen so many candidates ruin their chances because of just the mistakes Susan points out. This book is packed with useful information, is easy to read and is highly relevant for today's market. Susan is honest and to the point without being cruel. Even non-executives will benefit from this not-so-common sense look into behaviors that can sabatage your search for that perfect job. I particularly liked the section on networking, having experienced the negative examples that are illustrated here. This is a must read for anyone looking for a job or supporting someone who is.
